Mark “Papa” Guardado, San Francisco Charter President of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, was shot by an unidentified assailant about 10:30 pm on September 2nd. Guardado was shot near 24th Street and Treat Avenue in San Francisco. He died at San Francisco General Hospital.

Different news outlets are reporting conflicting versions of the fatal encounter.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Guardado fought with his murderer. “They had a wrestling match first,” the Chronicle reports homicide Lt. Mike Stasko as saying. “The guy shot him and he got on his motorcycle and left.”

KPIX TV, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco reports “Guardado was shot by someone on a motorcycle who drove up to him and opened fire. Investigators believe the gunman was probably a member of a rival gang.”

Or Maybe Not

The Mission District has been the scene of two other shootings in the last 24 hours.

Near 18th and Bryant Street, two people sitting in a parked car with a four-month-old baby were shot and critically injured. The baby was not harmed. Later, two men were shot and killed at 24th and Utah Street near Jack’s Bar. Both of those victims died.

No arrests have yet been made in any of these shootings.

Best Of Friends Worst of Enemies

The Hells Angels maintain generally friendly and peaceful relations with other motorcycle clubs in Northern California.

The peace is more strained in Southern California. On July 27th, ten members of the Set Free Soldiers Motorcycle Ministry allegedly attacked and stabbed two Hells Angels in a bar in Newport Beach. The Set Free Soldiers share colors with the Mongols Motorcycle Club. Los Angeles news outlets have reported that the Set Free Soldiers are affiliated with the Mongols.

Members of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and the Mongols Motorcycle Club have often disagreed. The most famous recent disagreement was fought inside Harrah’s Casino during Laughlin River Run in April, 2002. Three people died and at least 13 others suffered gunshot and stab wounds as a result of that brawl.

The Set Free Soldiers maintain they are only “a group of men who love Jesus and love to ride hard.”

Three Hells Angels were also arrested as a result of the Newport Beach brawl.

Frisco Angels And Law Enforcement

The San Francisco Charter of HA has been in the crosshairs of various law enforcement agencies for the last two years. In April 2006, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Joseph Wilson, then the Charter President, and Jason Peterson, the San Francisco Sergeant at Arms, on charges of possessing and intending to distribute large quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.

Papa Guardado had been convicted of assault in Massachusetts in the 1990s but had no criminal record in California. This February, he was charged with the unprovoked beating of an innocent bystander outside McNear’s Saloon & Dining House in Petaluma. At the time of his death, Guardado had not been convicted of that charge.

Mark Guardado was 45-years-old.
