Trump, Harley, Sound, Fury, Ghosts

Harley-Davidson’s current management team may not understand that the ever-evolving myth of Harley is bigger than they are and bigger than the company itself. But President Trump understands.

It should be obvious to everyone that a big, loud Harley has approximately the same symbolic meaning for the world’s vanishing, white working class that the buffalo had for the Great Plains Indians in 1890. Around that time a Presbyterian Paiute prophet named Jack Wilson believed that, with the aid of peyote and dancing, an army of ghosts might be raised to drive off the white settlers, resurrect the buffalo herds and restore the world to what it had been a half century before.

Sure, sure. It seems like a crazy idea now.

But the Paiutes. Comanche, Lakota, Cheyenne, Apache and so on had all kind of reached the end of their rope. As the America that has grown up and prospered since 1890 – which was the year the frontier disappeared – now approaches the end of its rope.

T.S. Eliot once wrote something to the effect that history is not so much about the passage of time as it is a “pattern of timeless moments.” And it is hard not to see Donald Trump glad handing and back slapping a company of Bikers For Trump at his New Jersey country club over the weekend and not see the moment of the ghost dance repeating itself.

Trump And Harley

Trump may indeed be a fool but he is the white working class’ fool and the ruling class seems so intent on creating a brave new world free of history that it does not notice. While singer/actor John Legend tells the kind of people who buy Harleys to just get over themselves; while Sarah Jeong, The New York Times newest editorial board member, tweets “oh man it’s kind of sick how much joy I get out of being cruel to old white men;” while Gavin Newsome lectures traditionalists about what he has decided should happen “whether you like it or not;” while the Democratic Party embraces socialism; while Harley boss Matt Levatich jabbers about mining new customer demographics; Trump opens wide his arms and says “I will be your champion.”

That is what happened this weekend.

Saturday the President invited 180 Bikers for Trump into the ballroom of his Bedminster, New Jersey country club. They chanted “Four more years” and “USA!”

He told them they rode, “the most beautiful bikes anyone’s ever seen.”

The next day Trump tweeted, “Many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great! Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors. A really bad move! U.S. will soon have a level playing field, or better.”

Chris Cox

This morning, Bikers For Trump founder Chris Cox told CNN’s Poppy Harlow “If we had our way, we would help Harley-Davidson reinvent that company and get it back to its American roots to remember the veterans, the blue collar and people that kept them afloat all these years. Many times they were in turmoil and we stuck with them. Now we need them and all other companies to stick with America.”

Harlow played “gotcha” with Cox. “Case in point, you sell these Trump T-shirts. Did you bring one with you?” Harlow asked. The shirts are made in Haiti.

“No. Your producer asked me to send one. I was happy to,” Cox said. “I think you’re getting your information from The New York Times. They forgot to mention our staple is our patch. This is made in Virginia Beach, Virginia. For us to sell T-shirts that are made in America really just is not very affordable for the bikers.”

“Isn’t that doing exactly what Harley is doing?” Harlow argued.

“Like Harley-Davidson, Bikers for Trump was born in America,” Cox said. “We don’t survive on the blood, sweat and spit of the American blue collar and the veteran who kept them afloat for so long.”

So far today, the value of Harley-Davidson’s stock has dropped almost two percent.

You can decide for yourself if the ghosts are returning to restore the vanished world or not.

@FrequentFlyer & Dasein = Thanks for the illuminating responses. You are lucky.
I recovered from a thorough ream job by my ex, following 10 years of unwanted Federal attention re: his pot smuggling career, all BEFORE the housing crash which I also survived- but my company didn’t, and there went the pension/annuity. I don’t have another 31 working years to compensate for any of that, or the willingness/charm to snare a 90+ year old oil baron – ala Anna Nicole Smith. I am not as confident about Social Security being there.

“Live while you can.” Great advice

Thanks guys – for restoring my faith; Shovelhead, Drifter, david…. keep up the good work.

  4. Hangaround Says:

    @Fallendesperado

This Haiti argument is ridiculous. Having been responsible for the design and purchasing of t shirts to be sold to support a club, Bikers for Trump is doing nothing but straight up profiteering. I am able to get American T’s and 2 color design silk screening done for about $8 total, and thats on a small scale shirt purchase. I should add that it did not take a huge amount of legwork to get this price either.

Bikers for Trump is following a the exact same no morals $ compass that almost every American company follow, maximum profit – USA be damned.

  5. Dasein Says:

FF: Back at ya. Those numbers really are incomprehensible. Consider: a bill weighs one gram, so a thousand hundred dollar bills weighs one thousand grams, One hundred thousand bucks in $100 bills weighs one kilo. Times ten, and it’s a million dollars, weighing 10 kilos, 22 pounds, put it in a suitcase. Even though it all fits in that one suitcase,a million dollars is a lot of money. A Billion dollars is a thousand of those suitcases, and a Trillion dollars is a thousand times that, or One Million suitcases, each containing a million dollars in hundred dollar bills.
A million is 22 pounds, a billion is 22,000 lbs, or eleven tons. A Trillion is Eleven Thousand Tons of hundred dollar bills.
From an ant’s perspective, a one story building probably looks about the same height as a hundred story building. That’s us, we’re the ants. We see one million as pretty huge, and a billion is larger, but we really can’t easily grasp how much larger. A Trillion really isn’t something we can intelligently imagine, and you’ll occasionally see the term Quadrillion in financial news, a thousand trillion, which is the realm of the global derivatives market, instruments that will ultimately become due. The entire dollar supply of the US is “only” about 15 Trillion.
    Live while you can.

  6. FF Says:

    @Dasein

Thank you for correcting me; when dealing with numbers that large it’s real easy to fudge them statistically.

I don’t have anything else to add to your analysis. Respect.

  7. Dasein Says:

FF: Sadly, DJ Trump was not in fact able to halve the national debt. It did drop some 100 Billion in first half of 2017, but that represents only one two hundredth (.05%) of the whole debt, some 20 Trillion, a Trillion of course being a Thousand Billion. It has actually increased, currently over 21 Trillion, for the first time in history. I’m with Trump also, but I don’t think he has truly fixed much of anything yet. He’s still in the phase of breaking what sucks, which he seems to have a real instinct and a knack for, and there’s plenty of that, in spite of the hordes of demonic monkeys piling on his back everyday. This country is like a gigantic leaky ship, heading for the rocks, with half the crew trying to sink it. I’m hoping he can sufficiently infuriate the enemies within as to paralyze them with the poison of their own hatred, plug the holes (with their bodies, wherever possible), and turn this thing around in what time he has left.

  8. Fallendesperado Says:

Sorry guys in the interest of accuracy i nerd to restate it’s less than a $1.50 difference between foreign and American made t shirts . More like a $1.30 to almost no difference depending on size. https://www.usabayside.com/tshirts.html

  9. Fallendesperado Says:

So i actually do screen printing of tshirts. You can buy American made tshirts and print them for literally a couple of bucks more on the cost side. Now as far as where the fabric materials come from to sew that American made shirt, I don’t have a clue. but even if you pass on the couple of dollar extra cost it seems his “not affordable” argument doesn’t wash (pun intended)….so much bs….if he’s really all that pro Americana it can be done

  10. Frequent Flyer Says:

    @Austin

Since Donald J became president? The National debt has been nearly cut in half. No small feat. Cuts down on inflation.

I will have social security. I will have my annuity. And inflation will not make those dollars worthless. Donald J bought us all AT LEAST another ten years before “the whole shit house goes up in flames.”

Bath House Barry Obamugabe fundamentally transformed the USA into East Germany. John Brennan, James Comey and the Obamugabe Regime unsuccessfully pulled of a bloodless coup by stealing the election for Hilarity Rotten Clinton, a criminal bitch.

There was never going to be enough patriots in the Peoples Republic of NJ to vote for Donald J, but there was enough in PA, WI, and FL.

Why? Because the Vichy Regime didn’t get to put their punching bag loser ala Juan McAmnesty, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush in the seat to make the election look legit.

Trump is an outsider. That’s why the Vichy Regime (republican party) Communists (democrat party) and their fifth column in Academia and the Media are STILL TRYING TO DESTROY HIM. And they are all scumbags.

    Peace.

  11. Austin Says:

    Hey FrequentFlyer- Very Interesting post. I had to read it again. Twice. I follow your history completely, and agree with your clear distillation. This;

‘The people responsible for the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890 were not WYPIPO™, they were the government. The same government that massacred World War I veterans’

…was new to me. Completely Unaware. I read the linked article two times. I asked my Dad, who had 3 WWI vet Uncles. 2 living in NYC at that time, 1 died in France. Dad didn’t recall ever hearing about it.
Now – I am wandering about in the fog trying to understand how you get from that – which sounds just horrible to me – to… Trump is the only thing between us & ruin. Did I understood your position correctly?

I think Trump has gotten people paying a lot more attention to politics, and people are becoming more willing to step up and get in the game. He is entertaining as hell.

I strongly doubt he has or will ever control his orgasms to allow any of his partners to finish first. It doesn’t mean anything, really – except that seduction allows you to control people who then desire to work with you to achieve the goal.
He seems to prefer to fight & ‘win’.
In my experience – that dynamic of constant power struggle becomes tedious, soul-sucking hard work. I lose interest in playing along, and if it keeps up as a pattern – then I plot my escape.

FF – can you help me understand what you are meaning by this statement? “Donald J is the only reason I have faith that I will be secure in my old age and have a pension.” and how the WW1 vet protest/battle relates to it?

    Thanks, man.

Edcan, the “Bikers for Trump” posers don’t resonate well with a great many bikers. Not everyone is cut out to be in a legitimate club, outlaw or otherwise, but it does not detract from the amount of respect one receives from those who are…

Unless, of course, you’re out there faking the funk. These “Bikers for Trump” posers are attempting to gain legitimacy through nothing more than the fact that they happen to own a motorcycle. They’re nothing more than a political faction of your local H.O.G. chapter.

  20. Frequent Flyer Says:

10,000 years ago, the planet’s last ice age, ended.

Sometime between then and about 5,000 years ago, homo sapiens in the fertile crescent, or the Indus Valley— perhaps both, simultaneously— had a genius among them. This genius said to his fellow hunter-gatherers, who were living in a constant state of fight or flight, “Instead of chasing these herds around, why don’t we put a fence around them?” And Lo, from that point forward, we got civilization. We got agriculture, religion, running water, tv’s— all that good shit. These Indo-Aryans gave us civilization, for better or worse. The Persians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans— all white guys.

5,000 years ago, there were also hunter gatherers located throughout the rest of the planet, in (sub-Saharan) Africa, Australia, and North and South America. Up until about 300 years ago, nothing changed in any of those areas. There wasn’t a genius among them. Nobody built a building, a ship, created an alphabet, developed a printing press; they didn’t have a single Michelangelo, DaVinci, Plato, Beethoven among them. Like I said, 5,000 years ago, Hunter Gatherers… 300 years ago Hunter gatherers.

I think it’s fair to say that they were a sub-human. They were NOT HOMO SAPIENS. Because even when the Europeans (the descendants of the Indo-Aryans) made contact with these hunter-gatherer societies and showed them technology and reading, writing and arithmetic— they still failed to compete or even keep up.

    But we pretended otherwise.

And that is why we are in this current state of war.

The Sioux and Comanche were not nice people. They were brutal hunter gatherers who were on the short end of a stick for most of their existence until the Spanish brought horses to North America. They mastered Equestrianism! And then commenced to slaughter every living man around them, taking their women and children as property. Both nations dominated North America’s plains– The Lakota (Sioux) in the North, and the Comanche in the South— for at least 300 years.

They never met in battle, but if they had, it would have been epic.

The people responsible for the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890 were not WYPIPO™, they were the government. The same government that massacred World War I veterans

All the other people named in this article are nothing more than a fungus— except Donald J.

Donald J is the only reason I have faith that I will be secure in my old age and have a pension.

OK so what is the big deal here? It’s my understanding that HD motorcycles for the US market will still be made in the US. Besides this is all predicated on the Trade war. Have you heard that China caved on the crude oil tariff? The HD of yesterday is gone and personally I don’t care. It’s not important in the big picture. Someone else here said that their are enough aftermarket parts out there to build whatever you would like to ride. After all HD is a business, like it or not businesses are good for this country. On the subject of Trump I will say only this; yeah he says cringe worthy shit at times but he is doing more than the last 3 administrations put together and the funny thing is he is losing money (according to both fortune and forbes) while in office. Unlike the Obama’s or Clinton’s who came in to office with little and left with 40 million and 100 million dollars respectively. Harry Truman once said “you can’t get rich in politics unless you are a crook”.

My newer M8 has huge oil pump issues that are damaging my bike. The oil in the transmission is going into the primary and it’s not the seal between because a HD bulletin doesn’t address the seal but addresses removing the excess oil in the primary and adding more oil into the transmission. What a pain, no dipstick on the primary. After a high speed ride from one city to the next and back again. Engine oil was blowing out the breather all over the motor and pipes, oil pump issues. The extra oil in the primary once drained showed a lot of metal shavings in the oil pain, fucking great. So now my $25,000 new M8 is nuking itself on me. And of course the dealer’s hands are tied because there is no HD bulletin on how to fix the oil pump issue in the new M8. After doing a little digging, this issue is out in the sunlight and HD can’t denie it, they know they have a huge fucking issue with the M8 oil pump. Typical HD not doing a damn thing or at least hurrying it up before a lot of folks bikes break. Is this break in any way life threatening? We are going to find out, count on that.

As far being a billionaire he got rich before he took office, not because of it like so many, and as for womanizing there is a list of presidents with that pedigree. This piece is brilliant, which is nothing new out of you. Thank you for doing this.
I can’t decide whether or not the ghosts are returning, but there is a glimmer of hope in some of the people I have met, or read about. These young guys like The Sinners (not a club for those reading) who traded in skateboards to build choppers in garages give me hope, as do many of the old timers, and even some of the young blood.
Then again there are those who seem bent on screwing this all up, whose priorities have motorcycles and carrying oneself as a man fall far below starting shit and running the mouth as opposed to opening the ears -and just riding. Those that have far too much to prove–on and off the big, bad keyboard frontier.
My next ride has been, or will be built in a small garage by guys who love the machine, and know more about it than I ever will–late to the party now at sixty plus.
Small companies like Cleveland CycleWerks will give HD a run for their money in places like India because of their product’s looks, standard motor displacement and price–they are already there (and 21 other countries outside the US).
Ain’t it funny how white men over 50 are such a scourge, especially if on a V-twin.
John legend and Sarah Jeong -FOESAD to both- probably also believe ‘there are no losers in any game’, ‘everybody gets to play’, and ‘there is justice for all’.
I may vanish or already have–being working class, but not without a fight, and knowing all about how ‘fair’ fights are -I’d bet John and Sarah don’t know a thing about that.
    Much Respect and Ride Free,
    -WMB
