Two members of the Mongols Motorcycle Club, Ruben Sanchez who was 34-years-old and and Angel Rodriguez who was 30, were murdered in an alley behind a bar called Club Azul in Los Banos, California in the early morning hours of August 7. Conflicting reports put the fight in the street in front of the bar. Both men were shot.
According to a police statement made four days later, police responded to a reported gunfight at 1:46 am. They heard shots and saw several people fleeing the alley. Sanchez and Rodriguez were pronounced dead at the scene. They were the first murders in Los Banos and the 10th and 11th murders in Merced County in 2011.
Police described the shooting as “gang related” but named no gangs, no suspects and no persons of interest.
Members of the Mongols and the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club participated in a bloody fight at a “Stop the Violence Rally” sponsored by the Victory Outreach Church at a park in Los Banos in the summer of 2008. Six shots were fired and a Hells Angels prospect was stabbed.
Witness accounts of that brawl conflicted. That fight was cited as one of the reasons why the motorcycle rally in nearby Hollister was cancelled.
As of this writing, the murders remain unresolved.
