Michael Edward Ottinger, a member of the San Diego Charter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club has been charged with the March 18, 2010 murder of Fernando Fernandez, a member of the San Diego Chapter of the Mongols Motorcycle Club.
Fernandez was on a date on March 16, 2010 with his girlfriend when the couple became involved in a dispute with two men at a bar in the North Park area of San Diego. Fernandez and the woman left the bar around midnight and rode about a mile to Los Panchos Taco Shop at 409 Washington Street in Hillcrest. The two men in the bar followed the couple and tried to continue the argument with Fernandez’ girlfriend at the Taco Shop. Fernandez confronted the two and was stabbed in the chest, head and neck.
He was removed from life support at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego on March 17 and died the next day. Fernando Fernandez was just 30-years-old.
Ottinger was arrested following a series of shock and awe Swat Team raids in San Diego County in the early morning hours of August 3, 2011. In one of the raids that morning, police from several agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration blew the door off the Angels clubhouse on El Cajon Boulevard in the San Diego suburb of El Cajon. The club was vacant at the time and was searched.
DEA Special Agent Amy Roderick said, “Everybody that we’re targeting today – we have several arrest warrants along with search warrants – they all have violent criminal histories as well as what we’re looking to arrest them for today…. It’s hard for me to say a lot more because we’re still in the middle of a criminal investigation.”
Police seized numerous unspecified items of “evidence” including all the clubhouse surveillance cameras.
Late on August 3 Tanya Sierra, a spokeswoman for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, said that no arrests had been made but Ottinger was in federal custody on August 5. He was being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center San Diego.
In addition to the murder of Fernandez, Ottinger is also charged with the January 2010 stabbing of Jesus Morales, home invasion robbery and making criminal threats. He pled not guilty to all charges at his arraignment August 6.
Channel 10 News in San Diego quoted an unnamed source who stated that Ottinger had been a suspect in Fernandez’ murder for more than a year.
