Thomas “Grub” Freeland, Jr.

Thomas “Grub” Freeland, Jr., a founder of the Warlocks Motorcycle Club, died last week near Columbia, South Carolina.

Freeland grew up in Lockhart, Florida, north of Orlando and enlisted in the Navy in 1965 when he was at 17. He spent nine months assigned to the USS Tutuila in support of Naval and Army operations in the Mekong Delta and 29 months aboard the USS Shangri-La.

Freeland, and 12 other sailors, founded the Warlocks while aboard the Shangri-La. He founded the Orlando, mother chapter of the club when he got home. In his later years he moved to his father’s home town in South Carolina.

Freeland owned more than 30 Harley-Davidson motorcycles in his life.

In addition to his brothers in the Warlock Nation, he is survived by his wife Cindy; his son Thomas  Morton Freeland III, his grandson, his sister Fran Strawn and his brother Mike,

There will be a memorial service for Grub Freeland at 10 a.m. on Saturday March 23 at the Thompson Funeral Home at 4720 Augusta Road in Lexington, South Carolina. His final ride will be from the funeral home to the Plum Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Plum Branch, South Carolina.

Thomas “Grub” Freeland, Jr. lived a long and happy life in the sun and the wind. He gave generations of men the gift of his brotherhood.

    When I was a kid living in Lockhart, Tommy gave us rides on his Sportster. It’s a big deal,when a grown cool guy makes time for snot noses. He always was a straight shooter, and eventhough it’s been years since I last saw him the impression made was life long.
