Ride Like A Girl

If you don’t know, maybe you should. Her name is Valerie Thompson. She crashed her motorcycle Monday at the World Speed Trials at Lake Gairdner in South Australia. She was going 343 miles per hour at the time. The tail of her vehicle, called BUB Seven Streamliner, became airborne at the four-mile mark of the 12-mile run and her braking parachute deployed.

Thompson was trying to break the land speed record of 376.363 miles per hour. If she had finished the course she would have broken her own record for women of 304.263 miles per hour.

The bike left a mile-long debris trail. Thompson walked away. Afterward she said, “Today didn’t go as planned. I always said that crashing was not on my bucket list, but I did it. It doesn’t feel very good because at 343 miles per hour, standing here talking to you is pretty, truly amazing.”

Sturgis Hall of Fame

BUB Seven is a red, pointy-nosed two-wheeler made of carbon fiber. It reportedly has a drag coefficient of .08 which is very efficient for a two-wheeled vehicle. It is powered by a turbocharged V4 engine that makes 500 horsepower. Thompson sits in an enclosed cockpit. It was built by Denis Manning. After the crash he said, “All the safety stuff we designed worked.”

Thompson is older than she looks. She used to be a banker. She started racing motorcycles when she was 37. Her first real bike was a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. She used to ride with men. She scared them. They thought she rode “out of control” so she took her motorcycle to a track to see what it would do. Her first drag bike was a turbocharged V-Rod. She broke 153 mph on that in All Harley Drag Racing Association competition.

She raced in National Hot Rod Association pro-stock events in 2008 and 2009 then started racing a BMW S 1000 RR. She broke 212 mph on the Beemer at the Texas Mile competition in March 2013.

She was appointed to the Bonneville 200 MPH Club board of directors in January 2017 and she will be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame August 8 in Deadwood.

Funny how it works, guy does 300 or so and it’s ho hum, some female does it and the whole world is fawning over her. Want to smell her seat and shit,
So what, it’s a useless activitie

  5. oldskewl Says:

The owner of that bullet is Dennis Manning (BUBS Exhaust) in Grass Valley Calif. There was a time when Bubs Bad Dogs were the pipes to buy for your EVO.

    Valerie has earned hers.

  6. FF Says:

Great article, Rebel. Valerie Thompson is an inspiration.

  8. Dutchboy Says:

Respect where it is earned and the Lady has earned it in spades.

  9. Penguin Says:

    “Lady Death” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyudmila_Pavlichenko

    Her score? 309

I’d say that’s proof enough that girls can be tough…

Had a degree in history and a baby before she joined up…

    @ Mark,

Time is the true friend and companion of disaster. In drag racing a catastrophic event can happen anywhere from burnout to the traps at the big end of today’s 1K ft. strips. In drag racing, time is not on the side of disaster. Due to the times involved (4-5 Sec. for nitro racers), the race is over almost before it gets started. However, when racing on the “salt”, a lot can go very wrong in the time it takes to make a two way, high speed pass over a measured ten mile course.

    Long May You Ride,

    Paladin

    @ Penguin

Sorry digger, balls of steel but this one’s definitely a seppo.

  12. Eddie Blaize Says:

Mad respect to her. Not everyone can make Rebel’s page.

  13. Mark Says:

Klock and 2 or maybe 3 of her daughters have world records at the Salt Flats. Not trying to undermine the Valerie, she’s very impressive and deserves all due respect that she gets. What many don’t understand about high speed records is the amount of time at high speeds it takes to set a record. Then to have to do it again and hit the same speed in the same place to set a world record. No easy task. World Champion drag racers, many of them can’t mentally deal with how long it last to set land speed records. Some refer to it as, quarter mile after quarter mile that seem to never end.
Cool and positive story Rebel, thanks.

  14. Penguin Says:

At 300 plus what’s between yer legs?

    Horses…

What’s there at standin’ still may be an innie or an outtie, but at 300+ it’s 100% balls.

Of course the lady is from oz…where it matters.

Good for her! (I bet it makes her horny)

  15. Crazy Harry Says:

I respect any girl who can be her own person and push the limits. They get put down for being a girl but they have done anything a man has. WW2 the girls built the tanks planes and ships, just start thinking from there on.

  16. david richerson Says:

this is great male female anyone going this fast is great. try 200 let alone 300. this is fantastic

  17. Hero Says:

1st point. In going to have to remove the phrase I have used in the past with friends, “stop riding like a girl!”.

2nd point. Be prepared as always to eat my teeth if I say that phrase and or start riding like that girl my self. That is truly amazing and all respects to anyone with those short and curly fries.

  18. Iron Rider Says:

I will give this lady her due, not many gals have a dream of wanting to do that kind of speed, and the fact that this lady seems to be able to handle riding at inedible speeds and still has a desire to do it after wrecking at those speeds, is something else!

  19. Laura Says:

I’m a girl that loves to go fast too, but I’m sure not in her league. I give her her immense credit! Give her some respect guys, she’s out there doing it. What are your wives and girlfriends doing?

  20. Aanon Says:

That’s some pretty wicked shit. I’ll take pretty over fast tho. Imagine if your ol needed her own space and stack. Oh hell no.

  21. James W Crawford Says:

While it takes a lot of money to join the 300 mph club, money alone is not enough.
The lady knows how to ride.

  22. Shutup Says:

And going for the 300 mph club. And that’s a short list. Respect

  23. eddie Says:

I ran a bike at Bonneville a couple years ago. Her pussy must be gold plated because mofo’s followed her around like lost puppies. Yea, she is fast, but if you have money anyone can go fast.

  24. Popeye Says:

Maybe now she’ll get back in the kitchen and make me a sandwich

  25. Adios Says:

    Come back for seconds

  26. Sieg Says:

    Durn…
