Allan “Gut” Terk

Allan “Gut” Terk a former Hells Angel, Merry Prankster, artist, graphic designer, psychedelic pioneer, drug addict, recluse, cowboy and minor 70s icon died January 18 of cancer at his home near Reno.

Terk was a Navy veteran who became a member of the Sacramento, Berdoo and Oakland charters of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. He was mentioned by name in Hunter Thompson’s Hell’s Angels and Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test; a book about the adventures of novelist Ken Kesey and his entourage as they rode around in a garishly painted bus named Further. Terk painted the buss. He created dozens of record album covers and posters for psychedelic era bands like the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company. He owned a head shop named Joynt Ventures in San Francisco and he managed a band named Blue Cheer.

At the end of the sixties he turned his back on his friends, dropped out of sight and spent most of the next 20 years as a homeless drug addict.

In 1992 he became a cowboy on a ranch in Santa Clara, California. In 2002 he moved into a Recreational Vehicle in Antelope Valley, Nevada, about 230 miles east of Reno.

He was diagnosed with cancer in 2015.

He is survived by his daughter Aura Winarick; his brothers Ray Terk and Bill Irvin; his sister Susan Irvin; and his granddaughter Ruby Yassen.

Allan “Gut” Terk was 78-years-old. He spent his life in the wind. At last he has found the calm.

Just thought I’d throw my .02 in here, regarding @OutlawArchive’s remarks, and the regulars (here) response.

@OutlawArchive: I think what you said (finally) about who you are and what your relationship with Gut was like, explained who you are and how you felt after reading the above article. I do NOT think Rebel disparaged Gut with his article. I took his words complimentary. Was Gut not a one-time addict? Would Gut not admit that? Did he not admit that? Many of us have lived the life and been addicts of one sort or another….myself included. I would be the first to admit it.
As far as “minor icon,” again I do not think Rebel slandered Gut. If someone called me a “minor icon” I’d be ok with that. I think Don Davis aka The Aging Rebel is a minor icon as compared to say, Jimmy Hendricks or Sonny Barger. I believe he meant it as a good thing. Not an insult.
If you have documented a small segment of this biker culture (and I haven’t read your book….yet)….then I say good for you, and thank you.
I’d suggest you not be so quick to sling shit here though, Don Davis is a prolific, intelligent writer of the “Outlaw Frontier.” There are many regulars here who will defend him to the death.
    Please consider that.

    Outlaw Archive,

Sorry your friend died, genuinely. But you’re still a disrespectful punk. What did Rebel say that wasn’t true? Gut was, at one point, a drug addict and was a minor icon, to be honest I thought Don made Guts life sound like a life extremely well lived. What did you think you were being smart typing out Dons name and place of residence? Was that meant to be intimidating? Don is a friend of mine who does more for my lifestyle and culture than 1000 other men, if you were remotely interested in this other than for the filthy lucre you’d know that.

  10. @OutlawArchive Says:

    Learn some manners Pops.

Drug addict and minor 70s icon? You’re a fucking asshole, and your site is trash.

  16. Not Surprised Says:

Atchive, who blew whom for that written forward, you or Christie. You’re both equally desperate for attention.

  17. Gandalf Says:

LOL… Could be Archive just remarked on Dude to make a nickel in order to publish a cool Pic book. ??? Dude IS 15min famous and on the dicks of publishers and readers. Rebel is a smart guy… Let Rebel decide if Archive’s “bragging” or book Disrespects Him. Maybe that forward is just the price of admission…. #shitcosts$

  18. LAMF Says:

You’re a punk plain and simple and your band sucks. Be happy to find you on the “streets” real soon lame rat.

  19. @OutlawArchive Says:

    Dear Mr Not Surprised –

First of all dumb fuck learn how to spell. It’s pictures not pitchers. Secondly you shouldn’t give a fuck who writes the forewords to my books, because you most likely can’t read. Third, I’m in the streets of LA every day. Come find me.

  20. Not Surprised Says:

Archive, you come and insult the man but you sure don’t mind using this site to promote your “work”. Makes you a pimp.

  21. Not Surprised Says:

It’s all good and shit if you sell your pitchers. You disrespect this site and its owner, that’s a different matter. Guy was a minor celebrity, comparatively speaking, and only a cupcake would choose that to be offended by.

  22. Not Surprised Says:

Atchive.I have zero respect for someone who brags about George Christie writing the forward to his book. Fuck you.

  23. Not Surprisedh Says:

    Dear Outlaw Archives

Fuck you. Rebel was good enough to mention Gut. If you knew more about the culture of this not for profit site

  24. Neuro Says:

@ Archive, Thanks for your very valuable work.

  25. @OutlawArchive Says:

Va.Bob i just released the second edition over Christmas. I have a few copies left at

  26. Va.Bob Says:

@Outlawarchive,or Bo :will there be a re-printing,i.e. more available copies?

  27. @OutlawArchive Says:

    Dear Not Surprised,

I am a publisher of limited books based around 1960s Outlaw MC’s, and their members. I’ve gone through great length to track down former members, and their family, to acquire their photos archives, and get them to contribute short, anecdotal, stories about the images. I’ve put together a collection of about 48 photo albums from the late 1950s trough mid 1970s. About 7,000 images and thousands of documents, newspaper clippings, and pieces of ephemera. I don’t hawk photos. Gut was one of the main contributors to, and designer of, my book Halfway to Berdoo – along with Buzzard, Dougie Poo, and many original SoCal GGMC, Straight Satans, Coffin Cheaters and Satans Slaves

  28. @OutlawArchive Says:

Hey Stevo, Gut was one of my best friends and mentors. He designed the cover of my book Halfway to Berdoo. I find the comments made by the Aging Rebel aka Donald Charles Davis of Redondo Beach, CA EXTREMELY DISRESPECTFUL you one of the most fascinating and kind human beings I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing.

  29. Not Surprised Says:

Outlaw Archives is some dude with a Facebook page selling photos of HA from the sixties lol shit

  30. Not Surprised Says:

    STEVO…good on ya

  31. Neuro Says:

He really lived the Dream. Angel and Merry Prankster. I read he was President of Berdoo at one time. He even walked out of the flames of the nightmare later. I always wondered about that Filmore poster for Big Brother at the Longshoremen’s Hall and now it makes sense. He designed it and others too. Mouldy Marvin said he was pretty much the coolest Member ever.

  32. Shrapnel Says:

RIP and keep in mind that we all ride in the same club on the other side.

  33. Dutchboy Says:

Fair Winds and Following Seas to a complicated man who swam in complicated seas. Prayers and condolences to his family both blood and patch.

  34. Nick Mead Says:

  35. Paladin Says:

    Dear Rebel,

Based on the accomplishments listed in your article, it is obvious that Mr. Terk was many things. However, I don’t believe any of them were minor.

    Long May You Ride,

  36. The Kraut Says:

Respects to Alan for a life lived his own way and condolences to all who loved him, family, friends and Brothers.

  37. Stevo Says:

    Outlaw Archive,

You cowardly disrespectful punk, grow up.

  38. JMacK Says:

Respects and condolences to his family and friends.

  39. @OutlawArchive Says:

  40. Va.Bob Says:

Good article and photos in the S.F. Chronicle. RIP.

  41. Mark Says:

Blue Cheer, many decades later it hits me where the name for that acid came from. I wonder if it came from the same press without the “O”.
Allan, may your new adventures be beyond your dreams that they would be.

  42. Paladin Says:
