About That Waco Bar Fight

According to witnesses who were there, almost everything that Waco police spokesman Patrick Swanton alleged and that the Waco Tribune-Herald reported about that alleged biker fight in the Chapter 11 Club early Sunday morning was inaccurate.

The lead sentence in the Waco paper’s story was, “Waco police are investigating an incident in which members of a Bandidos motorcycle gang support group assaulted a man before the victim pulled a gun, started firing and ran away.”

That lead is a deceptive lie. Colorful details in the story were also obviously fictional.

Indirectly quoting Swanton, the Tribune-Herald reported, “One of the group held a knife to the victim’s neck until he was able to pull a gun from his waistband and fired several shots, Swanton said. He escaped the assault and ran from the bar”

Witnesses Say

According to witnesses, a drunken man entered the bar and began harassing a female patron. One of the bikers asked him to stop. Witnesses describe the biker as “polite.” The drunk then pulled a gun and was disarmed by the motorcycle enthusiasts in the bar after he fired multiple shots. After the drunk was disarmed he abandoned his gun, ran out of the bar and escaped in a car. The bikers also left.

A waitress wrote down the armed drunk’s license plate number and gave it to police.

The Tribune-Herald repeatedly referred to the armed drunk as a “victim.” Swanton, who gave no indication of knowing the armed drunk’s identity, described him as “battered and bleeding” to reporter Tommy Witherspoon.

Witherspoon then gratuitously tried to connect the drunken gunman to the Twin Peaks tragedy two years ago. He reported: “Swanton said it is unknown at this time if the incident was related to the May 17, 2015, Twin Peaks shootout, which left nine bikers dead and more than 20 wounded after bikers from rival groups – including the Bandidos and Cossacks – opened fire on each other at the former Twin Peaks location in Waco.”

    Old joke.

A biker decided to visit the zoo one day. He sees the hippos, the giraffes, and all the rest, and he’s just come along the lion cage. He sees a kid fall in. Without really thinking it through, he jumps into the cage. Just as the lion is about to bite the kid in half, he lands on the lion and starts kicking the shit out of it. Finally, bleeding and battered, he crawls out with the kid and lays there on the sidewalk, panting. A reporter runs up, and says “that’s amazing! This is front page news, who are you?”

The biker says “Well, my name’s Bob, and I ride with the Sock Wranglers, and I’m a Biker.”

    The reporter rushes off…

    Next day’s paper.

“Biker named Sock Wrangler, a member of the Bobs, assaults African immigrant, and steals her lunch.”

Part of the problem MC’s face with the media, is that the media has historically shown that they will take the side of LE. The media has a habit of siding with the first side that talks to them. When an alleged crime takes place, LE is usually the side that contacts or is contacted by the media to give their version of what happened. News agencies always want to be the first to let you know and the sheeple want to be the first to know. The media always has confidential LE sources. How do those relationships develop? Maybe money, sex, who knows? By the time the media has contact with an MC, the latest breaking news has already been announced and the waters have already been polluted. Why waste time trying to defend yourself through the media when the sheeple have already taken the LE story hook, line and sinker? Most figure it’s better to make sure the house is clean and go into damage control mode.

As for “don’t talk to the press” that is a rule for general membership in most clubs and organizations including the Military. Should the Club’s have a designated Press Officer? Hell, that’s their business and none of mine. Best rule for us grunts, When the press shows up dummy up!

  5. Dutchboy Says:

FXDL what have you against Kentucky? As for Freedom of the Press it extends as far as the guy who owns the press, in this case that would be Rebel. General rule, when a guest in someone’s home don’t crap on the carpet.

  6. New England Rider Says:

    @Guido –
I think as a general rule most 1%-er clubs have a “don’t talk to outsiders” rule, police and media alike.
Having said that there is definitely an information war going on, as Rebel mentions. Some of the larger clubs even have PR reps now, or at least lawyers who act as spokespeople.

  7. Rebel Says:

    Dear Guido,

In general, clubs have a “do not talk to reporters” rule. But there is an information war going on.

I touched on that in a story I published last Christmas Eve, https://www.agingrebel.com/14902

  8. Gandalf Says:

@ Guido I do believe The Bandits are trying to do exactly what you suggested these days with the Media. I don’t know this for sure but somewhere on Rebels Blog I thought it was discussed.

  9. Guido Says:

@TX_Biker – That sounds about right. Thank you for explaining it once again. Long may you ride.

  10. Anonymous Says:

    @David Torres,

Rebel pays the domain registry here to host his freedom of speech, not yours. If he is removing your comments than I am glad, he gave you a lot more slack than I would have. Take your fail troll bullshit back to Twitter.

  11. TX_Biker Says:

@Guido, Hey paisano the question has been asked in the past and the answer is the same as always. The press doesn’t want our side. we have to stay villains so they have something provocative to sell as news. Their is an old saying, “When we do good nobody remembers, but when we do bad nobody forgets”.

    Just the way it is.

  12. Guido Says:

I am not in a motorcycle club. I am what club members would call a weekend warrior or maybe even a RUB (without the “R” part as I have the bills to prove my lack of cash). I have owned a bike for as long as I have been able to ride one (30+ years) but my occupation does not afford me the time to ride it like I want. I have been reading Rebel’s site for several years because I like to keep informed on what is going on out on the road so that when I do ride, I don’t inadvertently ride into something that is none of my damn business. For a lack of better words, I use this site as recon.

With all that said, I have a potentially stupid question. I understand that 1%’ers do not cooperate with LE. I also understand why. Does this lack of cooperation also apply to the media? The reason why I ask is because with the way things are today, it might be worth consideration for an MC that when something like this happens, the involved MC sends a media spokesperson to the media to report what actually happened. LE knows that their side will be the only one reported, so they can spin the story however they see fit (and usually do). The MC’s should “beat them to the punch”.

The risk will always be that the media will still only report what LE says, but at least this way everyone knows the media was informed. As it stands now, LE gives their story and because the media is too lazy to fact check, they print it. So the story is always going to be one sided.

Just an observation from someone that doesn’t have a dog in the fight. I am certain that this has already been thought about by the clubs. If you have the inclination to explain why this is a bad idea, then I would love to hear it. If not, then I completely understand.

Much respect to all of you. And thank you rebel for keeping up the good fight on behalf of those affected by the Waco travesty. I really hate to see good people treated the way they have been by the injustice system.

@FXDL we don’t want them here ha

Living in Texas and having a wife who was a barmaid here for many years I can honestly say that drunks discharging firearms and acting like louts don’t go over particularly well with patrons of such establishments. If my wife is any example of the norm, the fool’s lucky he didn’t get shot from behind the damn bar!

“Rebel, why silence me? No freedom of speech?”

The way it works, Mr. Torres, is after you post, there is a slight delay while the gerbils run down the long tunnel and deliver the message to the hamsters, etc. What you should be doing is; Get up and go to the frig for a refill, take a leak and come back. Then hit that little circle-y arrow thing at the top of your page to reload and…. viola! there you are.

“Rebel, why silence me? No freedom of speech?”

I don’t speak for Rebel, but if I had to guess, you were silenced (which obviously hasn’t worked), because you’re disrespectful rude, insulting and contribute nothing to the threads you post on. Based on your prior posts, I have every reason to believe that if you respond to mine, it will be more of the same.

For someone that professes to have worked in the D.As office in some sort of professional capacity, you represent yourself as one of the most unprofessional individuals I’ve ever come across.

  21. Thefixer0508 Says:

Hey Waco this crap is why the rest of Texas makes fun of you. Ever since your idiot cops called in the Fed govt and you idiots burned a bunch of women and children to death no one believes your backwards asses

  22. TX_Biker Says:

Of course the police and wacko press reported it differently. The actual events do not fit their 2 year bullshit story er I mean narrative……

  23. Shovelhead Says:

Freedom of Speech has it’s consequences Davy. for instance, if you & I were standing face to face and you talked to me like you do online?

Do you have the Freedom to say all these nasty things? yes you do.
Will I punch you in the face? Absolutely!

  24. Sieg Says:

Hey Torres, no your speech ISN’T free. Rebel has to pay for every letter you type, so I guess that means he gets to decide what to let by and what to delete.

You don’t like it, first step would be to donate to the site.

  25. jicase Says:

@DavidTorres, go out on a public street corner and say whatever you want. Your freedom of speech does not extend to Rebel’s website.

  27. Gandalf Says:

Boy every bone in my body wants to believe this Story 100%. I’m 99% sure it’s closer to the truth than Swanson/Trib BS. It’s Illegal to have a gun in a bar in Texas so the “Victim” is Guilty no matter what the story is. That said while it’s usually stupid to bring a knife to a gun fight… In this case it was a smart move and that Genius is the only real suggestion (IMHO) that The Bandits were involved. Please let us know if the ass hole with the gun is ever charged or even looked for by the Waco PD. That’s seems important to me because it’s the only criminal act that both sides can agree on.

  28. Iron Rider Says:

The cops love to get their “version” of events out to the media and then of course the media swallows what ever the cops say like it is from God himself. How often does the media question the cops version of events? Like almost never , that is unless witnesses or video comes forward telling a whole different version of events than what the cops lead everyone to believe with their media releases.

I have said this before and I will say it again Swanton’s story of “hordes of angry bikers on their way to Waco for revenge armed to the teeth” was all designed to keep the media from getting near anyone that was near, at or in the vicinity of Twin Peaks from telling the media what they witnessed and telling the media that BEFORE the cops could get their version out.

The cops have been spinning narratives and leaking video and information to select media ( ie: media whose lips are permanently on law enforcement’s ass ) to discredit anything that doesnt jive with the cops version of events.

That is also why we saw Reyna go to his Judge pals and get such a blanket order forbidding defendants or their counsel from talking about anything to do with what occurred for Twin Peaks, got to stifle the truth from coming out. Same reason the cops went to any business with any kind of surveillance camera systems and hoovered up all their recordings in case they caught what took place.

It amazes me how much of the public believes anything the cops put out about any event they are involved in that the police version is exactly what happened. The cops have SPIN down to a fine art and it is why their communications/media relations departments have such a huge budget to run them that employs journalists and lawyers amongst the staff.

  32. Dutchboy Says:

“Heroic Biker Defends Woman’s Honor and Disarms Drunken Shooter.”. Nahhh, doesn’t read as well or promote the “official lie”. I can just imagine the next big headline “Biker Sniper Shoots at Valiant Officers Before Fleeing at High Speed”, true story title “Car Backfires on Main Street, Police demand grief counseling and a safe space with security blankets”.

  33. rw Says:

I found it interesting that on the waco trib page the story on the billion dollar suit was top of the page and this was third or fourth down. The story read like a cut and paste right from Swantons email.
If cut and paste is all you have to do to be a reporter for the trib I could do that.

Maybe McLennan County didn’t get their grant! The only answer to that is to have the trials out of town. Otherwise, they can’t afford them. Maybe?
