Michael Lee "Big Mike" Godwin

Michael Lee “Big Mike” Godwin, a widely known and beloved member of the Durham, North Carolina charter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club died about 4:45 p.m. on August 13 in Durham when his motorcycle was struck by a truck driven by Jonathan A. Gonzalez Lopez. Godwin was travelling east on Geer Street when Lopez, who had been travelling west made an illegal left turn into Godwin. Lopez was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Big Mike Godwin was born in Durham. He was a 1975 graduate of Durham High School. He worked in chemical logistics and MotoWash sales for a company called Carolina Pride Carwash Systems & Solutions in Roxboro, North Carolina and he lived in Stem, North Carolina.

He is survived by his son, Nick Godwin.

Rommel Harley-Davidson in Durham will hold a Benefit Bike Night for Big Mike this Wednesday, August 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. All proceeds will go to helping the family with his funeral expenses.

There will be a memorial service this Saturday, August 22, at 11 a.m. at the Fellowship Baptist Church, 515 Southerland Street in Durham. Following that service there will be a benefit lunch at Crazy Shots Billiards, 668 N. Churton Street in Hillsborough.

Big Mike Godwin turned 59 last month. Many men loved and respected him.

He died in the saddle.

    RIP…wtf…a misdemeanor…really? That’s it? Guess killing people on bikes means almost literally nothing. Hope he’s riding hard upstairs.

    Yea a misdemeanor because it’s our fault for riding, I guess they think. Same thing just happened to a rider here. Bullshit.
